Dance Classes

CHOOSING YOUR CLASS

Please read the information below and choose your class carefully. The Committee will consider your choice and endeavour to place you in the class of your choice but we reserve the right to place you in the most appropriate class.

It’s important for you to choose your class carefully as your choice affects not only yourself but others in the class.  It’s important to realize that years of dancing do not necessarily make you an advanced dancer; it all depends on your innate ability and attending advanced technique classes. Ask friends for their opinion or your teacher.

Please use the information below and the flow chart under it to help you decide which class to choose.

The classes will be divided into two main bands:

The
TECHNIQUE CLASSES will be serious technique classes which will concentrate on footwork and dancing formations and dances correctly with most of the dances being RSCDS ones. You must be physically fit to take part in these classes.
  • Intermediate
This is a class for dancers who have only been dancing a few years and who wish to improve their technique focusing on footwork, giving of hands, phrasing etc.
  • Advanced
This is a class for dancers who have danced for several years and want to improve their knowledge of all points of technique. This will be a high impact class.
  • Very Advanced
This is a class for dancers who dance at a very high level with excellent footwork, technique, and knowledge of formations. This will be an energetic high impact class.

The LOW IMPACT CLASSES are for dancers who no longer wish to do concentrated work on steps and formations. There will be two of them -
  • Advanced, Low Impact
For dancers who have achieved a very high level of dancing and now wish for a gentler class. The technique will be more about points like phrasing and giving of hands rather than footwork.
  • Social, Low Impact
For the experienced dancer who would like to relax and enjoy social dancing. This will be  a fun class with lots of interesting dances.

Rest and Be Thankful

For the dancer who no longer wants to attend morning classes but would like to have the choice of attending the afternoon and evening sessions.

Music Class

Chris Duncan music course – Playing for Scottish Country Dancing

Chris Duncan has generously offered to run a music course during the School. The intention of this class is to explore what it means to play for Scottish Country Dancing. Performance will be encouraged but not compulsory. He will start by examining how to make tunes sound Scottish. Then he will look at how to arrange tunes to fit the dance, how to watch the dancers, and most of all how to enjoy it all! Just bring your instrument, your ears, and a pencil. Chris will provide all the paper you need, including blank music manuscript.

At this stage, the plan is to have 4 classes of 2 hours. One lesson would be for jig, one for reel, one for strathspey, and then if you wish, one lesson to try it all out on some willing dancers.

Let us know if you are interested in this.

Ta muchly.
