WELCOME TO THE 48TH AUSTRALIAN WINTER SCHOOL

WHEN?   Saturday 5th – Saturday 12th July 2025
WHERE? Shoal Bay, New South Wales.

It’s hard to believe that 2025 marks 50 years since the first Winter School in 1976. That was also held in the Hunter Valley – at Tocal. Interestingly Ros McKie, who is one of our Committee members, was also on the staff of the very first Winter School. It’s been a very successful endeavour ever since, only interrupted during the 2 years at the height of the COVID pandemic. We’d like to celebrate the commitment, energy and enthusiasm – and doggedness! – of every Branch in Australia, which have all worked hard to keep the tradition going.

This year it is once again being held in the Blue Water Wonderland of Port Stephens. Accommodation will be at the Wyndham Ramada Resort in Shoal Bay, in 1, 2 or even 3 bedroom studios or apartments. Meals will be held on site, and halls are within a few kilometres – and all with wooden floors.

Come and join us to enjoy 50 years of fun, friendship and fitness in an enchanting environment.

Newsflash! Chris Duncan music course – Playing for Scottish Country Dancing

Chris Duncan has generously offered to run a music course during the School. The intention of this class is to explore what it means to play for Scottish Country Dancing. Performance will be encouraged but not compulsory. He will start by examining how to make tunes sound Scottish. Then he will look at how to arrange tunes to fit the dance, how to watch the dancers, and most of all how to enjoy it all! Just bring your instrument, your ears, and a pencil. Chris will provide all the paper you need, including blank music manuscript.

At this stage, the plan is to have 4 classes of 2 hours. One lesson would be for jig, one for reel, one for strathspey, and then if you wish, one lesson to try it all out on some willing dancers.

Let us know if you are interested in this.

Ta muchly.
